'Harmony' voted No.1 character
(Global Times 2010/10/18) By Liu Chang

The Chinese character for harmony (和) was voted as "the most representative written Chinese character" in an online poll organized by China Heritage magazine, reflecting that Chinese society is still influenced by its traditional values.

The Xinhua News Agency reported Friday that more than 50 experts on Chinese history and language studies were invited to propose a total of 374 characters for Internet users to vote for the top 100 most representative.

The poll was conducted on the official websites of Chinese National Geographic and hanzi.com. Characters listed included mythical animals of China, such as "『竜』の簡体字 (dragon) and "『鳳』の簡体字(phoenix); while others refer to Chinese philosophy and religions, such as "儒" (Confucianism) and "中" (center).

The results were published in the latest edition of China Heritage. Coincidentally, "harmony" was also chosen to represent Chinese culture during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Su Peicheng, a Peking University expert on Chinese characters who compiled a list of 20 for the vote, told the Global Times that his selection was based on those "that are the most common and have interesting origins."

However, not all the proposed characters carried positive connotations.  Wang Xuetai, researcher at the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said "淡" (light, thin, indifferent) is the character that represents China most.

His opinion was echoed by Xia Xueluan, professor with the Faculty of Social Sciences of Peking University, saying it best reflects the low-key lifestyle of Chinese and their tendency to choose the "middle way."

Another popular character choosen by experts is "『貪』の簡体字" (greed). Li Ming, scholar of Chinese language and history in Qingdao, Shandong Province, said "greed" is like rust that had been growing on the Chinese culture for thousands of years.

"It is worth considering given the times," he said.

Huang Xiufang, editor-in-chief at the magazine, said many of the selected characters are keywords in Confucius doctrine, which deliver the meaning of benevolence, loyalty, filial piety and etiquette.

Xavier Garnier, director of Alliance Francaise in China, said he believed the characters for "morality" and "kindness" to be the most representative in Chinese language, as he feels "complete kindness is the pursuit of many Chinese people."
